Material: paperback

Summary: Monroe is always full of questions, and today he wants to know how you "do" art. With some guidance from Mom he begins to explore the Arts, from schools of painting and writing, to theatre and music. This is a fictional story that includes art history lessons on every page.

Type of Reading: family reading, playtime reading, read aloud book, interactive reading

Recommended Age: read together: 5 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 10

Interest Level: 6 to 9

Age of Child: Read with 5-year-old child.

Young Reader Reaction: This took some prompting to get multiple readings. Our child sat through the readings and looked at the pictures, but could never really answer questions about what was happening on the pages.

Adult Reader Reaction: Whoa! This book is a chore to read. Yes, it has pictures, but there is WAY too much text. Not only for the story itself, but every page includes a sidebar with factual information and sarcastic comnments by Kitty Fantastic.

Pros: The story is packed with information about the various types of arts there are, helping kids understand that Art is more than just pictures.

Cons: The book tries to do too much. It would have been a lot more enjoyable if each of the art genres had been handled in separate adventures.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. The book offers some value in introducing the various art forms in ways that we parents may find difficult to explain. This is a good library/school library book.
