Summary: Every day, on the way home from school, Miranda stops and chats with her elderly neighbor, William. Today he has some good news and some bad news to share with Miranda, a fifth grader. The bad news is he’s moving away to be near his children. The good news is that he has a present for Miranda; a beautiful carpet that has magical powers. William encourges her to enjoy the carpet’s magic, help others, and to beware of Ellery. No sooner had her head hit her pillow that night, when the adventures begin. This is an adventure story for middle grade readers.

Reading Level: 5.7
Age of Child: Teen STAR Review Team reader, age 15.
Young Reader Reaction: The book's first impression is an image of peace and joy, with Miranda (the main character) riding a carpet. The book gets very exciting with Miranda's effort to save her friend Jacob, and the interaction with Ellery. Although this book is for kids ages 10 to 13, I personally enjoyed it a lot. The book not only highlights the way of kindheartedness, but it also shows consequences for bad, cruel people. I highly recommend this book, especially for young teenagers who may also be worried and frustrated by their bullies. The book was surely very exciting to read.
Adult Reader Reaction: The author hits the mark with believable characters, a simple plot, and a magic carpet. It’s an entertaining and enjoyable read. Still, they are not as captivating as some of the fantasies reviewed for The Reading Tub (e.g., Royce Adams, David Budbill).
Pros: The author has created an enjoyable and fast paced adventure story. Readers will find it hard to put the book down.
Cons: Though the book is worthwhile and enjoyable, one might find the recommended retail price of $12.95 for a paperback to be a little high.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow. This is a wholesome and enjoyable adventure story and will delight its intended audience. Teen reviewer: The book was surely very exciting to read.
