Summary: There is no one like you. Even though you may share similar characteristics with someone else, or even have feelings that other people have, when you put all the pieces together, there is only one you! This rhyming book offers affirmations to kids about how special and unique they are.
Type of Reading: bedtime story, playtime reading, read aloud book
Recommended Age: read together: 4 to 8; read yourself: 7 to 9
Interest Level: 4 to 9
Age of Child: Started reading with 4-year-old child.
Young Reader Reaction: Our child likes this book. It isn't one s/he pulls off the shelf every night, but she enjoys picking out the things that make her You-nique.
Adult Reader Reaction: We started reading this with our child when s/he started preschool. Now, two years later, we still read it periodically. The story is a nice pick-me-up on days when things get frustrating.
Pros: This is a positive, fun way to help kids see themselves as special. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and complement the text perfectly.
Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This book has great long-term potential. As your child becomes a more sophisticated listener (moving beyond simple recitation), it will be fun to engage him/her in talking about how they see themselves.
Educational Themes: This is a book with lots of long-term potential. With pre-readers you can identify objects (like balloons, colors, body parts) or feelings. As kids grow, there will be opportunities to share a little of themselves: naming the things they like/don't like; family members they resemble; listing their own attributes.
Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, emotions, family
