FARMS LIFT AND LOOK (Usborne Lift and Look)

Author: Felicity Brooks

Illustrator: Keith Newell and Jo Litchfield

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Usborne Publishing Limited,

Material: board book

Summary: A young girl is on the farm in several different locations. Her journey sets up scenarios for a "search and find" using creative lift-the-flap cutouts. This board book offers toddlers and preschoolers a chance to egage in reading.

Type of Reading: playtime reading, interactive reading, read aloud book

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 5; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 2 to 4

Age of Child: Read with 3-year-old boy.

Young Reader Reaction: My son enjoyed lifting the flaps and identifying the objects and animals on the pages. This was a book he wanted to read again, and he picked it out in subsequent readings. He liked talking about "Anna."

Adult Reader Reaction: I appreciated the detail and thought put into the lift-the-flaps. For instance, inside the apple you saw the apple seeds and a worm. In the barn in the background, the chickens were smaller and often you could "see through" the flaps, not that they were transparent, but many were of trees and bushes so you would know what was behind them (e.g., hot air balloon behind a tree).

Pros: Kids love lift-the-flap books. Even though the main character is a girl, this was perfectly appropriate for a boy. The illustrations are great for growing with the child and for repeated readings.

Cons: None. I wish it had just one more spread.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow, at least. This is a book that can grow with your child. You might talk about tractors and chickens with a 2-year-old, and then six months later talk about mommy chickens and baby chicks, or how tractors dig up dirt to plant corn.

Educational Themes: There is plenty to do with this book. It has excellent educational value, offering counting, animal identification, and science (plants, animals, etc.)

Literary Categories: Fiction - picture book, animal characters, interactive learning
