EIGHT SILLY MONKEYS

Author: Steve Haskamp

Illustrator: Steve Haskamp

Reserve at the Library

Publisher: Intervisual Books, Inc.,

Material: hard cover

Summary: All Mama's monkeys love jumping on the bed, and, you guessed it, they each take a tumble. Mama calls the doctor and the doctor says… This is a fun story for (trying) to teach the perils of jumping on the bed!

Type of Reading: playtime reading, family reading, read aloud

Recommended Age: read together: 2 to 6; read yourself: 5 to 8

Interest Level: 3 to 6

Age of Child: Started reading with child 2½ years old.

Young Reader Reaction: With every read, we go running down the hall to jump on Mommy and Daddy's bed! S/he liked kissing each of the monkey's boo-boos.

Adult Reader Reaction: It's a fast read, thank goodness. Despite our best efforts to hide it in the pile, s/he found it to read! Luckily, that only lasted a week. Not sure it would hold the interest of a seven-year-old, even as a reading book.

Pros: It's pure toddler: quick paced and action packed, with simple words.

Cons: You know they're going to jump anyway, you just wish it wasn't on the bed!

Borrow or Buy: Borrow. You don't want to have this one around too long.

If You Liked This Book, Try: BARNYARD DANCE!   FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS WITH NOTHING TO DO   GOOD NIGHT, GORILLA

Educational Themes: None, to speak of. You can try to explain the hazards of jumping on the bed, but they're going to follow the monkeys' lead.

Notes: Reading Tub reviewer borrowed this from the public library.

Literary Categories: Fiction - animal characters, picture book, humor
